Onion Maggot
Delia platura
Maggots are typical fly larvae up to 7mm long cream with a thickened tail, and tapering front with a modified head region and visible dark mouth hook.
Check crops at emergence and early growth. Crops sown into paddocks with large quantities of plant stubble and debris will be more at risk. More severe damage may be seen on previous years stubble rows.
Larvae tunnel in the stem and root, often causing death of the plant in association with rotting organisms.
